This is helpful when trying to locate Saturn from your backyard. In general, the gas giant planets Saturn, and Jupiter are quite bright and easy to identify in the night sky. By 4 am, it has reached a high enough apparent altitude to comfortably view Saturn through a telescope. The Stellarium planetarium software will show you where and when to find Saturn from your location.Īt the time of writing, Saturn rises early in the morning from my latitude on Earth. This will show you exactly where to look for Saturn from your location. To find the current location of Saturn, I suggest using an astronomy app on your mobile phone with a planetarium simulator. Saturn is not always visible to everyone on Earth because sometimes it lies too close to the Sun from our vantage point on Earth to view at night. The position of Saturn in your night sky will also depend on your location on Earth. It is orbiting the Sun just as Earth is, except that it takes Saturn 29-years (Earth years, of course), to complete its orbital period around the Sun. The position of the planet Saturn in the night sky changes over time. It is the second-largest moon in the entire solar system.įor more information, check out Universe Today’s roundup of interesting facts about Saturn. Astronomers have discovered that Titan has a substantial atmosphere. Saturn has over 80 known moons, and 53 of them are officially named. Saturn’s rings are mostly comprised of ice particles, along with rocky interstellar debris and dust. The most famous feature of this planet is, of course, its beautiful ring system. It is the 6th planet from the Sun in our Solar System, and the second-largest planet overall. Saturn is a massive gas giant with an average radius of about nine times that of the Earth. This is what Saturn looked like the first time I saw it through a telescope. In this article, I’ll explain how you can see Saturn through a telescope yourself, and what to expect. I suggest using a 15mm eyepiece through a Dobsonian telescope ( here is the one I own and recommend) for the best chances of success. It is said that any small telescope is capable of viewing Saturn’s rings at 25X magnification. This affordable telescope had enough power and magnification to see Saturn’s rings, in all their glory. I first viewed the planet Saturn with a 4.5″ Dobsonian telescope from my backyard about 10 years ago. You won’t see a NASA quality image of Saturn using a backyard telescope, but I think you may be surprised at how satisfying a “real-time” view of this planet is. Seeing Saturn through a backyard telescope is an experience that everyone on Earth should be able to enjoy at least once in their lifetime. Video: Photographing Saturn at Opposition. And I couldn't seem to get anything else going. I'd written a very long novel called "The Stand," and I'd finished it. There was a market, it is an actual market in Bridgeton, Maine, where my wife and I lived at that time. KING: "The Mist"? (Laughs) I answer these questions and I always sound totally mad, barking mad. TAPPER: How did the idea of "The Mist" come to you? But organized religion gives me the creeps. I'm not a vampire type, when somebody shows me the cross or something like that. And I certainly don't have anything against churches per se. But I haven't been through the doors of the church, I don't think since my mother-in-law died. I certainly believe in God, and I meditate on a regular basis, and try to stay in touch with the God of my understanding. TAPPER: Religious characters don't fare very well in your books, I've noticed. But that's one of the things this kind of story's supposed to do is to help you deal with that a little bit. That changed the way we think about things and in a way, it's what my brother used to call "the blue car theory." You buy a blue car, you see blue cars everywhere.Īfter the 9/11 apocalypse happened in New York City, people, particularly New Yorkers, who breathed in the ash, or saw the results of that, have a tendency to keep seeing echoes and having flashbacks to it. But the fact is, that was simply uh, a great big old dent in the fender of the American psyche. But as far as 9/11 or the things that happened, I think that with a movie like "The Mist" people will mention that sort of resonance and they're going to conjure up 9/11. That's one of the things that I've always liked about horror fiction, and about fiction in the fantastic, is that it does have a resonance. And certainly we've seen this time and time again in our own lives, that as the situation worsens, in various parts of the world, the religious fanatics have a tendency to become more and more powerful. Because everybody's pretty well solemnly grounded, and nobody's worried about anything. Carmody, who's in the market, and to begin with she's sort of a figure of fun. In another part of the story, there's a religious zealot, Mrs. It's a place where you can take your real anxieties, and park them for a while, and not worry about them anymore.īut the story of "The Mist," in the background, there's this idea that the military has been fooling around with something that's too big for them, and has torn an actual hole in the fabric of reality, and these awful creatures from another dimension have come through. But anybody who's ever had a nightmare knows that every nightmare has a basis in actual anxiety. Because a story like "The Mist" is a nightmare. If you tell the truth, within the scope of a fantasy, people will hear those reverberations. It had been part of the scenery in a couple of shootings, and so I thought it seemed better to pull it than to leave it around. 11, I thought of that, and I thought, "Geez, I published that book around 1978." There's another one called "Rage," that I've withdrawn from publication, because it was about a school shooter. But the book ends with a passenger jet into hitting a skyscraper. STEPHEN KING: Keep in mind that I also wrote a book called "The Running Man" that was made into a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. They'll turn to whatever promises a solution." It is all so evocative of 9/11, and yet amazingly, the novella on which the film is based was first published in 1980. In one very pointed line in the film and the novella, a character says, "If you scare people badly enough, you'll get 'em to do anything. It focuses on the townspeople stuck in a supermarket, facing a new threat, their world having changed forever in an instant, turning on one another, disagreeing on how to deal with the threat. The latest "Stephen King" movie, which opens later this month, is "The Mist," about a small town in Maine enveloped by a dangerous fog. The following is a transcript of Jake Tapper's interview with Stephen King for "Nightline." The transcript has been slightly edited for clarity and narrative flow. Next week a film version, written and directed by Frank Darabont, hits theaters. In the book, an abnormal, supernatural mist takes over a small town in Maine, revealing vicious unworldly creatures. MATLAB can plot a 1 x n vector versus an n x 1 vector, or a 1 x n vector versus a 2 x n matrix (you will generate two lines), as long as n is the same for both vectors. One thing to keep in mind when using the plot command is that the vectors x and y must be the same length. If we wished to plot this function, we could create an m-file with the following code to generate the basic plot shown below. Consider the following simple, linear function. The default is that each time the plot command is issued, the current figure willīe erased we will discuss how to override this below. We found typing is quick and super responsive with no lag too.Īs with its predecessor, the Kobo libra 2 is waterproof and can withstand being plunged into two meters of water for 60 minutes. Finding out word definitions and making notes is also very straightforward – just long-press on the word of your choice to be taken to that menu. Of course, it’s meant to read books, so you’re not going to want to use this often, but if you head into your settings and click beta features, you can open a web browser – handy if you want to quickly look something up but don’t want to reach for your phone or laptop. You can, of course, still manually adjust the amount of light your ereader gives out by visiting the settings.Īnother interesting feature that we stumbled upon is that you can access the web using this device. It’s a great feature that has been designed to reduce the amount of blue light exposure, and we really found a difference when reading at night. This model has very good lighting, which covers the whole screen with no dimming in the corners, and deploys ComfortLight pro throughout the day to make reading a more comfortable experience – this is based on the time of day, not the lighting in the room you’re in. The buttons are also really well placed, they’re easy to press when using one-handed and because of the auto-turning function, they suit left-handed users too. Just press and hold the navigation button, and it will quickly flip through the pages without any screen refresh. One handy feature we stumbled across is fast nav which makes whizzing through your book much easier. The buttons are also very responsive, soft and easy to use. Read more: 6 best DAB radios for kitchen discos and garden listening We really loved using this ereader in landscape mode, as it gave much better margins and offered an overall better reading experience. The gyroscope technology is still there, which allows you to view this ereader in either a landscape or portrait mode, and it does have an automatic function. The libra 2 has a slight lip next to the buttons, which keeps your thumb comfortable when used in landscape mode. It still has one large bezel which hosts the page turn buttons. The back of the device has a woven pattern for a more comfortable grip, and that’s also where you’ll find the power button, which is in a recess so you won’t accidentally turn it off mid reading session. We even had to do a double-take at the official stats as the libra 2 feels smaller and lighter than the H2O. But believe us when we say the difference is negligible – in fact, there’s just 23g between them. The design is pretty similar to the previous model, although unusually, the libra 2 is slightly larger and heavier. The top navigation bar also offers you access to the settings, brightness and battery level. You have all the options you need in one space, so you’ll be able to see the percentage read, recommended books, my books and related reads. The home screen is laid out in a familiar fashion and follows the previous models’ footsteps. The Kobo+ subscription service works very much like Amazon Unlimited, where you have a huge choice of books and audiobooks that can be downloaded with no extra charge, so it does feel like a shame not to have this option. However, as we mentioned earlier, we are really disappointed that we can’t access the Kobo+ subscription in the UK. Again the process is so simple – add the pocket extension to your web browser, and if there’s an article you want to read but don’t have time, save it, and it will automatically push the article through to your reader for you to read at your leisure. You can also get access to web articles, thanks to the partnership between Kobo and Pocket. Once that time is up, it’ll disappear from your borrowed items. The process of borrowing a book is just as straightforward too – simply find something you want to read, and it will tell you how long you’re allowed to borrow it for. Setting this service up is very easy – you just head to the settings, find your local library and then enter the details from your library card. Kobo is also the first ereader company that offers built-in support for libraries – using its Overdrive software lets you borrow books from your local library, so long as you’re a member. The Kobo store has around 600,000 ebooks on offer, and the libra 2 supports over 15 file-formats, including epub, epub3, pdf, mobi, jpeg and png. When it comes to finding content for your ereader, then you’re spoilt for choice. The launch comes hot on the heels of the new Amazon Kindle paperwhite which offers 8GB storage and a 6.8in screen, and sells at £129.99. The Kobo libra 2 retails at £159.99, just £10.99 more than the previous version, the Kobo libra H2O.
